Listing tips
When listing a book, CD or DVD (you can put Videos in the DVD section - but make it clear it is a video you are offering!) make it descriptive. Add the text from the jacket and maybe a small review. Mention the condition of the book, for example "Fair" or "Good" or "V.Good" or "As New" if brand new! Please do not list any special promotion items with 'not for re-sale ' printed on them. Do not list in more than one genre - otherwise you will be offering multiple copies!
If going away, for example on holiday, mention in the listing that you will not be able to send within a certain period.
What happens when I sell a book, CD or DVD?
When a book is sold you receive a confirmation e-mail giving you details of where to send it.
Who pays for postage?
The seller pays for postage. A typical paperback should cost up to 75p to post second class. CDs and DVds usually less. It should still be cheaper than the postage charged, in transactions, by a famous online book site. Ok – in our case it is the seller paying and making that commitment!
Isn’t it easier just to drop my items into a high street charity shop?
Yes, but you wont be helping WaterAid or Sightsavers and this site is specifically targeted at raising funds for them.
How much does it cost to post a book, CD or DVD?
Things got a bit more complicated in August 2006! "Pricing in Proportion' was introduced by the Royal Mail, which changed the way all mail is priced, by introducing a combination of weight and size to determine the costs of postage. As a guide - books will be categorized as either 'Large Letter' or 'Packet', depending upon the thickness of the book once packaged.
A typical small paperback should cost about 75p to post, second class, in the UK - it will depend on packaging. Several site users have reported that they got a 260 page paperback posted for 60p second class - for example, The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency, by Alexander McCall Smith, in paperback, placed in a strong A5 envelpoe, with sellotape as reinforcement, was delivered for 60p! Though another was charged £1.52 as a second class packet and others have paid 82p. What can we say!
Thin books (up to 25mm thick) should be fine if posted in strong envelopes and sealed with tape. This will allow the book to be posted as a ‘Large Letter’ for up to 75p. If you use padded envelopes the extra thickness may make it “Packet” and cost £1.39.
OOP member “Charlie” (part of the Gulliver's Travels re-listing team!) suggests placing the book in an envelope within an envelope. Then sellotape along the edges with a couple of runs around the envelope - think you get the idea - protect the edges! Padded Mail Lite Envelopes are another method - we have had reports of a 280 page paperback posted 1st class for £1.21 Example Postage Costs at this link Postage Costs
You can use the Royal Mail site to put in dimensions and weight and then buy stamps online and so avoid any queuing.
Sorry, you still need to pop your item into a post box! Follow this link Royal Mail Calculator
I am not resident in the UK – can I use the site?
Yes of course – good old Paypal can cope with transactions in other currencies. Please mention in your listing your location otherwise it will be assumed you are UK based! In the review notes state if you are offering your item only within your country of residence or prepared to post overseas.
What if I want to donate more for the item after I have received it?
Good for you! If you feel you want to donate more just follow the Donate links on the site and send the extra direct to Water Aid and Sightsavers.
What happens if I order a book/cd/dvd and the owner never sends it?
You must inform us within 14 days. The member that has not fulfilled their commitment, as a seller, will be removed and barred from using the Only One Pound website. You will be refunded your purchase fee – legally (and morally) we must offer a refund. At no stage will Water Aid or Sightsavers International be responsible for any site member failing to abide by the spirit in which the service is offered.
